Comma Practice

An interactive grammar PowerPoint for a high school writing class created to test student knowledge of correct comma use and then reinforce areas where students may struggle. The lesson begins with a warm-up slide to gauge student knowledge of proper comma use. After presenting this lesson, students asked several questions to ensure that they understood the rules that were presented. The students' writing significantly improved after this lesson and I noticed fewer comma issues in future writing assignments. Included are both the PowerPoint and the PDF.

Hyphens and Dashes

Students often struggle with hyphens and dashes and confuse these two marks of punctuation. In this lesson, which was taught as part of high school writing course, the difference is thoroughly explained and examples are given. The first slide introduces the two marks of punctuation, and this allows the teacher to gauge the students' current level of understanding. This is a skill that needs to be worked on for more than one lesson. After this lesson, I noticed that students still confused the two marks and I used individual conferences with students to further explain the different between these two marks of punctuation. Included are both the PowerPoint and the PDF.
